I’ve been making my way through this video series called California is a Place. It really is insightful and beautifully made. I really appreciate the care taken in the details of each piece from the lettering of the titles, to the depth of field in the shots and the colors.

Be sure to see Borderland. I had a dusty taste in my mouth after viewing this.

Dick is right. “Every American should see this.” It is real and it is striking. In some places it stands 18 feet tall and looks like the gates of Mordor. In other places, it is barely 10 feet tall and looks like it was put together with a stapler. It runs from the Colorado River directly into the Pacific. It is big, intense and intimidating. And it is unfinished. Gaping holes are everywhere. Physically it’s confusing. Politically it’s puzzling. Ideologically it’s complicated. But for Dick and Ron, who both live within a few miles of the border, defending it is simply a matter of protecting themselves and preserving their own beliefs. Drug smugglers don’t come to the United States to make an honest living. As the recent killing of Border Patrol Agent Robert Rosas shows, the border is more than a moral line in the sand. The fence is real. We recommend a visit.

I also recommend this one on Oakland’s Scraper Bike scene, Scrapertown. I’m reminded of an NPR report from back in 2008 about the story’s original exposure on YouTube—Scraper Bike Fever Spreads, Thanks To YouTube

I was just reading this article about Apple and Adobe’s squabble over Flash where they compare the two companies arguments with tag clouds of words used—a great idea. That got me thinking about all those books or documents I wish I had or had time to read and all that info I wish could just be injected into my skull in Matrix-like fashion. If I could just have some shorthand visual I could at least pretend that I’ve grasped the core argument of any document I’m supposed to read in full.

For instance

My 6th grade History teacher, Mrs. Reiter, should not be surprised to hear me admit that I never completed my summer reading in the months of June-August of 1995. I assure you that my choice of the longest and most dense of all the books on the list was merely a vote for the cover design I found most aesthetically pleasing and not some sort of academic determination. In fact, I got to page 5 of William L. Shirer’s 1029-page masterpiece The Rise and Fall of the Third Reich and decided that, as a work of art, it looked much better closed and on my shelf than it did open. But that’s okay, I’m making up for that now. This word cloud tells you everything you need to know (or would remember) about the book and it only requires a careful few seconds to ingest.

William L. Shirer’s The Rise and Fall of the Third Reich

When was the last time you read an entire End User License Agreement, Terms and Conditions, or a Privacy Policy? Exactly! I know I’m not going to read these things, but I could at least take a moment to glance at a visual in the time it takes to check the “Yes I agree” box.

It was recently pointed out to me that Facebook’s Privacy Policy is longer than the US Constitution.

By GUILBERT GATES/The New York Times

In short, I’m much more prone to inspect this—

Facebook Privacy Policy

—than read this.

——

This post as a word cloud

“People were surprised by the very rapid rise in gas prices, and they changed their driving behavior,” said Kenneth A. Small, a transportation economist at the University of California, Irvine. “But my suspicion is that it is temporary. As soon as unemployment gets back to pre-recession levels, we will see Americans doing a lot more driving again.

Obviously it wound up being somewhat polarizing. You had lots of people commenting that they thought it was one of the best ads Nike’s done, and the other side saying, “How could you do that? It seemed creepy.”

We’ve never shied away from taking a strong position. In this case, we wanted to help amplify the voice of Tiger the athlete. He said himself that if anyone had lost a father they would understand what that ad was all about.
